Fresh out of warrior school, Princess Thyra is angry. Instead of being celebrated for her top performance at the Academy, the King and Queen of Benedor decree that her wedding to a northern prince will be sealed the following week. Fuming, Thyra drags her Hayward friend through the palace garden to get away from the suffocating dances. But as they are nearly discovered by her guard, Thyra and her friend stumble upon a secret corner of the garden, where an eerie sight hits them: tombstones from the Great War, and an ancient curse written in stone.

All firstborns in Benedor are stillborn. Now married to Prince Zander, Thyra is surprised to find a flourishing passion rapidly growing between them. But when the topic of children comes up during their honeymoon, Thyra is shocked to find out most firstborns live in Zander’s kingdom. As Zander storms out of the room, equally shaken by their future child’s tragic fate Thyra never questioned, the curse in the garden suddenly becomes much too real. 

Returning to the palace after the honeymoon, Thyra juggles her new responsibilities as Crown Princess, while desperately searching for any information that could break the curse. When she can no longer ignore the life growing inside her, Thyra climbs to the mystical temple carved in the high mountain, as all royal women of Benedor have done before her. There, she receives a vision about her kingdom’s dark past and a prophecy that could not only change her unborn child’s fate, but save all future firstborns.
