Fresh out of warrior school, eighteen-year-old Princess Thyra discovers her betrothal to a northern prince isn’t the only danger she faces. An ancient curse, cast by a vengeful Witch King, is the true reason firstborns perish in her kingdom—not the old gods as a rebellious cult named The Iron Raven claims.

Following her arranged marriage to Prince Zander, Thyra is surprised to find a flourishing passion rapidly growing between them. Now pregnant, Thyra climbs to the mythical temple carved in the high mountain and receives a vision about Benedor’s dark past and a prophecy that could not only change her unborn child’s fate, but save all future firstborns. 

Determined to break the curse and with five months left to find the Witch Kingdom before their baby is born, Thyra and her prince ride across lands crawling with trolls and fae, beyond the safe border of Benedor. An encounter with a power-hungry dragon finally strips them of their weapons and gifts. Left with nothing but a gravely injured company and a few stolen dragon scales, Thyra confronts her kingdom’s sworn enemy when suddenly, her labour begins…one month too early.
